I have been playing with Senegalese percussionist and singer Lamine Sonko, guitarist Ben Hauptmann and accordionist and singer Judy Gunson. Lamine has a beautiful voice and I have been inspired by some of the traditional tunes that he sings. I think I will definitely include one in the new album.
We have also come up with a great version of Mama Tembu's Wedding, with a new melody in the middle. The people loved it at the last two shows and I personally like it very much, so that is also destined for the new album! Not everyone agrees with me (especially not the jazz police), but I think I'll follow my heart on this one...
I've also composed a piece for solo flute, but it's a bit out there, and I will have to test it with audiences to see if it communicates the way I feel it. I might change the instrumentation later, if it looks like it would work better...
